Holographic engineer Lewis Zimmerman arrives to use Bashir as the model for a new Long-term Medical Hologram and, against Bashir's wishes, invites his estranged parents to the station for interviews. A conversation they hold with the hologram, believing it to be their son, exposes the secret he has kept for years.
As a struggling young boy, Julian was illegally genetically enhanced by his parents, which should bar him from Starfleet. To protect his career, his father agrees to plead guilty and serve a short prison term, allowing Julian to keep his commission. In a subplot, Zimmerman courts Leeta until Rom finally works up the nerve to declare his love for her.
