The crew fights for the ship in a recreation of World War II.
Janeway blows up the sickbay equipment controlling the crew, and they wake from their roles to find the Second World War raging through the ship, while Neelix and the Doctor are stuck among drunken Klingons. Captured by the Hirogen leader, Janeway learns his real aim: his people are scattered in small hunting parties, and holographic hunts could help them settle and stay together. The two agree to a truce.
One of his officers, however, has come to believe the Nazi ideology he has been playing, kills his leader and orders the Voyager crew shot. Neelix and the Doctor merge the two programs, and the Klingons charge in to stop the executions, before Harry Kim cuts the holodeck power. Janeway ends the conflict by giving the Hirogen the holographic technology in return for peace, a decision that returns to haunt the crew in later seasons. The fourth-season story combines a period war film with the Hirogen arc.
