Stranded on a planet whose terrain keeps shifting, the young crew finds Murf and an injured Gwyn, the Diviner's daughter, while the holographic Janeway activates a beacon to guide them back and defends the Protostar from the planet's attacks. After most of a day spent walking in circles, Dal and Gwyn set aside their mistrust and work out how to navigate by the stars.
The Diviner and Drednok land in pursuit, but the planet leads them astray, and the crew reaches the ship. With Gwyn aboard, they engage the experimental proto-warp drive for the first time and leave their pursuers behind. The episode closes the opening stretch of the series: Gwyn, raised as her father's heir on the mining colony of Tars Lamora, now travels with the prisoners who escaped it, and the Protostar remains the prize the Diviner will keep hunting. Julie and Shawna Benson wrote the episode, with Alan Wan and Olga Ulanova directing.
