Chakotay is captured by an enemy that is not what he seems.
Chakotay's shuttle is shot down over a jungle planet, and he falls in with the Vori, soldiers fighting a brutal enemy, the Kradin. Living alongside them, he sees the Kradin commit cruelties, and he comes to hate them and joins the fight. Meanwhile Voyager, searching for him, finds the Kradin to be friendly and willing to help.
Tuvok, helped by a Kradin team, rescues Chakotay, who learns that his time with the Vori was a staged training program meant to recruit him as a soldier. When he goes back, the village scene resets for another recruit. Back on Voyager, Janeway admits she does not know which side is right, and Chakotay has trouble letting go of his hatred for the Kradin. The fourth-season episode is about propaganda and how easily hatred is taught, and it centres on Chakotay's experience.
