Chakotay is face to face with an alien Starfleet Academy.
Voyager discovers a space station housing a detailed recreation of Starfleet Academy, complete with staff, cadets and the groundskeeper Boothby. When a captured cadet kills himself, the Doctor finds that the people there are members of Species 8472 who have altered themselves to look human, and Chakotay returns undercover, growing close to an officer named Valerie Archer.
After Chakotay is exposed, a standoff follows and Janeway negotiates with the station's leader. Each side suspects the other of planning an attack, and the aliens explain that the station exists to study humans in case of a Federation invasion of fluidic space. Janeway's decision to stand down earns their trust, and the two sides exchange information and agree to a truce.
