Boothby was the longtime groundskeeper at Starfleet Academy who served as a mentor to many cadets, including the young Jean-Luc Picard.
Boothby was the groundskeeper at Starfleet Academy in San Francisco for decades. Though he never served as an officer, he was a wise and plain-spoken figure to many cadets, and Jean-Luc Picard credited him with helping him through a difficult time as a young man.
In 2368, Wesley Crusher met Boothby at the Academy during an inquiry into a fatal accident involving his flight team, Nova Squadron. Boothby urged Wesley to think about his duty and his honesty, and Picard, who had sent him to see the old man, later pressed Wesley to tell the truth. Boothby was also mentioned many times by Picard over the years. Later, on Voyager, Species 8472 built a replica of the Academy grounds to study humans, including a copy of Boothby.
Boothby represents the human side of Starfleet Academy, a reminder that wisdom can come from outside the chain of command.
