Soong and the Augments seize a Starfleet medical facility to steal hundreds of frozen Augment embryos.
Soong leads his Augments to Cold Station 12, a Starfleet medical facility holding some 1,800 frozen embryos from the Eugenics Wars. An Enterprise landing party that includes Phlox is captured along with the staff, among them Phlox's friend Dr. Jeremy Lucas, the station's chief medical officer.
The Augments need Lucas's security codes, and Malik pushes for torture and threatens him with a deadly pathogen until he gives in. Malik also kills Smike, an Augment the crew had captured, and sabotages the pathogen containment before the Augments escape with the embryos.
