A Delta Quadrant species plagued by a disease.
The Vidiians are a humanoid species from the Delta Quadrant who suffer from a terrible disease known as the Phage, which slowly destroys their bodies. They are tall and thin, with a ravaged appearance that reflects their condition, and they devote their civilisation to the search for a cure.
Their desperation has led them to take organs and tissue from other species, which they use to repair their own bodies, and they are feared in the region as organ harvesters. Their society was once one of great beauty and cultural achievement, but the Phage has led to a decline in their morals and in their way of life.
Voyager meets the Vidiians in the episode Phage, in which Neelix has his lungs taken. The crew attempts to find a way to treat the disease, and B'Elanna Torres becomes the focus of the Vidiian story in Faces, where she is split into human and Klingon halves by a Vidiian doctor. The Vidiians remain a persistent threat during Voyager's early seasons, and their situation is a tragic one.
