A species who rely on others for technology.
The Pakleds are a humanoid species who appear simple and slow at first glance, with heavy builds and a limited vocabulary. They have a talent for scavenging and taking advantage of whatever others will give them, and they are known for their persistent requests for help.
They are not very skilled at invention, but they are keen to acquire technology of any kind and often approach other species to ask them to explain it. Their ships are cobbled together and hard to predict, and their society is not well understood.
The Pakleds first appear in the Next Generation episode Samaritan Snare, in which they pretend to need help with a damaged ship in order to take Geordi La Forge hostage and learn how to improve their technology. Picard and the crew manage to rescue La Forge. The Pakleds return in Lower Decks, where they become a recurring comic presence, and their ships are noticeably more capable than anyone expected.
