The first human warp-capable ship, flown by Zefram Cochrane in 2063, whose test flight led to first contact with the Vulcans.
The Phoenix was the first human ship to travel faster than light. Zefram Cochrane built it in Bozeman, Montana, ten years after World War III, using an old nuclear missile as the launch vehicle and keeping it in a former missile silo.
In Star Trek: First Contact, the Borg travel back to 2063 to stop the flight, and their sphere attacks the silo. The crew of the Enterprise-E repairs the damaged Phoenix, while Picard and others fight off drones aboard their own ship. Commander Riker and Geordi La Forge fly with Cochrane on the launch.
The Phoenix reached warp speed on schedule, and its warp signature was detected by a passing Vulcan survey ship. The Vulcans landed at Bozeman that evening and made first contact with humanity, the event that set Earth on the road to the Federation.
