Homeworld of the telepathic Betazoids and of Deanna Troi's mother, Lwaxana; a Federation member world.
Betazed is the homeworld of the Betazoids, a telepathic people. It is a long-standing member of the Federation, known for its gardens, its formal ceremonies and its honest, open culture, where hiding one's thoughts is difficult and considered rude. Wedding ceremonies there are traditionally held with all participants unclothed.
Betazed is the home of Deanna Troi's mother, Lwaxana Troi, who holds the title Daughter of the Fifth House. In the Next Generation episode Haven, Lwaxana arrives on the Enterprise-D to see Deanna through an arranged marriage to Wyatt Miller, agreed between their families years before. In Manhunt, Lwaxana comes aboard again while going through a Betazoid phase that greatly increases her desire to find a husband.
During the Dominion War, in 2374, the Dominion captured Betazed, a severe blow to the Federation. The loss of a long-standing member world so deep in Federation territory added to the pressure on Starfleet that year.
