An icy moon and a founding member of the Federation.
Andoria is the icy homeworld of the Andorians, a moon that orbits a gas giant and is covered in snow and ice. Its harsh climate, with deep glaciers and bitter cold, shaped the character of its people, who live in settlements built to cope with the conditions and who value toughness and loyalty.
As a founding member of the Federation, Andoria has played a large part in the development of the alliance. In the early twenty-second century, it was a rival of Vulcan, and the relationship between the two worlds was marked by mistrust and by disputes over a Vulcan monitoring post at P'Jem. Over time, diplomacy and shared interests brought them together.
Enterprise brings Captain Archer to Andoria in the episode The Aenar, which introduces the pale Aenar of the polar ice, and the moon features again in the story of the Federation's founding. The planet has since been a stable member of the Federation, and Andorian figures such as Shran have become well known as an example of how enemies can become friends.
