The crew helps free drones in the Borg's virtual world.
Thanks to neural inhibitors from the Doctor, Janeway, Torres and Tuvok keep their own minds after being assimilated, and they work inside the Collective to spread the nanovirus that lets Unimatrix Zero's drones stay aware. Tuvok's inhibitor wears off, however, and he is drawn into the hive mind. The Borg Queen destroys her own ships to kill the awakened drones and threatens to keep going until Janeway gives in.
When the Queen threatens to release a lethal version of the nanovirus inside the dream realm, Janeway concludes that Unimatrix Zero must be shut down, and Seven says goodbye to Axum. Voyager, aided by a Borg sphere under rebel control, recovers the away team, and the freed drones take over several ships, starting an uprising within the Collective. The seventh-season opener gives the Borg civil war of the series' last years its start, and Seven must accept the loss of a relationship she had only just recovered.
