With Number One under arrest, Spock takes the Enterprise without authorization to answer La'An's distress call and uncovers a plot to restart the Klingon war.
The second season opens with Number One under arrest and Pike away finding her a lawyer. When La'An sends a distress call from the mining world Cajitar IV and Admiral April refuses to act, Spock and the crew take the Enterprise from spacedock without authorization.
On Cajitar IV they uncover a conspiracy of former Starfleet and Klingon soldiers who want to reignite the Federation-Klingon war using a false-flag ship built from Starfleet parts. M'Benga and Chapel are captured aboard it and escape just before Spock destroys the vessel. April reprimands Spock but privately welcomes the result, with the Gorn threat on the horizon.
