Phlox treats an Antaran patient who refuses help from a Denobulan, while three crew members try to rescue scientists from a cave.
The Denobulan Science Academy asks Enterprise to evacuate three Denobulan geologists from a planet whose government has fallen to xenophobic militants. Because of his caving experience, Mayweather leads Tucker and Reed deep into the cave system, but he injures his leg along the way, and the others must persuade the reluctant scientists to leave before a ceasefire expires.
Meanwhile, Phlox treats Hudak, an Antaran with severe radiation poisoning from an evacuee transport. The Antarans and Denobulans share a long history of conflict, and Hudak refuses care from Phlox, who respects his wishes despite Archer's order. Phlox is troubled by the hatred between the two peoples, and Hudak finally accepts treatment. The episode was directed by Robert Duncan McNeill, with a teleplay by Chris Black and John Shiban.
