Neelix dies and is brought back, shaking his faith.
Neelix is killed by an energy discharge while collecting protomatter from a nebula. Using Borg nanoprobes, Seven of Nine and the Doctor bring him back after he has been dead for nearly nineteen hours. Neelix is shaken to find he saw nothing of the Great Forest, the afterlife his Talaxian faith promised, and he begins to doubt everything he believed.
Chakotay guides him on a vision quest, but it only deepens his despair, as his late sister Alixia mocks his faith and his shipmates tell him his life means nothing. Neelix decides to end his life by beaming himself into the nebula. At the last moment Ensign Wildman calls for him because her daughter Naomi will not settle without him, and he realises he still has a purpose. The fourth-season episode deals with death and loss of faith, and it gives Neelix one of his most serious stories and deepens his bond with Naomi.
