Dr. Emory Erickson, inventor of the transporter, uses Enterprise in a secret experiment to recover his son, lost in a transporter accident years earlier.
Dr. Emory Erickson, the inventor of the transporter and an old friend of Archer's family, comes aboard Enterprise with his daughter, Danica, to test a new long-range transporter. Danica explains that her father changed after her brother Quinn died in an early transporter experiment about fifteen years before.
The test takes place in the Barrens, a starless region, where a strange anomaly kills a crewman with radiation. T'Pol learns the anomaly is Quinn, and Archer realizes the Ericksons have been using the ship to try to rescue him. Archer agrees to help anyway. Quinn is recovered, but he dies soon after. The episode was directed by David Straiton and written by Alan Brennert and Ken LaZebnik.
