The Ligonians are a proud, tradition-bound people, and their leader Lutan is charmed by Lieutenant Tasha Yar and takes her as his first. When Picard objects, a ritual fight to the death becomes the only way to restore her freedom.
The hour is an early look at the Federation's wrestling with unfamiliar cultures, and in this case a sensitive subject. It is widely regarded by fans as one of the weakest episodes of the first season and has drawn criticism for its portrayal of the Ligonians.
