Lutan was the ambitious Ligonian leader who abducted Tasha Yar and arranged a fight to the death to seize his wife's wealth.
Lutan ruled the Ligonians of Ligon II, where the Enterprise came to obtain a vaccine for an outbreak of Anchilles fever in Code of Honor. After touring the ship he abducted Tasha Yar as a display of daring, then announced that he wanted her as his First One, the role already held by his wife Yareena.
Yareena challenged Yar to ritual combat with poisoned weapons, and Lutan refused to hand over the vaccine unless the fight went ahead. The crew realised his real aim was to inherit Yareena's land and wealth if she died. Their plan to revive Yareena after the fight ended her marriage and cost Lutan his position.
