Tal is a Varro scientist Harry Kim meets in The Disease, while Voyager helps repair the Varro generation ship, a xenophobic society's home for four centuries. Their intimacy triggers a physiological bond common among the Varro, which makes Kim glow and distracts him from his duties, putting him at odds with Janeway.
Tal is revealed to belong to a minority who want to leave the ship, and she helped create the synthetic parasites meant to break its pods apart. When the damage threatens both vessels, Kim's plan saves them, and the separatists are allowed to depart. Kim and Tal then part ways.
