The Varro are a Delta Quadrant species who have travelled for centuries aboard an enormous generational ship assembled from many smaller vessels. Isolationist by nature, they keep contact with outsiders to a minimum, and relations between Varro and other species are tightly controlled.
In The Disease, Voyager helped repair the Varro ship, which was being damaged by a parasite. Harry Kim began a forbidden romance with a Varro woman, and because Varro form a biological bond during intimacy he was physically affected. Janeway had to separate them, and the crisis exposed tensions within Varro society over isolation.
