Augmented human bridge officer of the USS Discovery whose body and mind were hijacked by Control, forcing her crewmates to sacrifice her.
Airiam is an augmented human Starfleet officer serving on the bridge of the USS Discovery during the 2250s. Sara Mitich played her in the first season and Hannah Cheesman took over the role in the second. Extensive cybernetic enhancements, the result of a serious accident earlier in her life, allow her to store and manage her own memories.
Airiam is a quiet presence on the bridge through the Klingon War. During the second season she is infected by a probe from the future, and Section 31's artificial intelligence Control takes over her systems, turning her into a tool against her own crew. In the episode Project Daedalus she fights the takeover long enough to ask Michael Burnham to eject her into space, and Burnham reluctantly does so before Control can secure the sphere data. Lieutenant Nilsson later takes over her post.
Airiam's death was a turning point for the second season, showing how dangerous Control had become. Her story also gave a rare focus to one of Discovery's background bridge crew.
