Chakotay's Maquis raider, pulled into the Delta Quadrant by the Caretaker and destroyed when Chakotay rammed it into a Kazon ship to save Voyager.
The Val Jean was a small Maquis raider commanded by Chakotay, a former Starfleet officer who had joined the resistance against the Cardassians. Its crew included B'Elanna Torres, Seska and, unknown to Chakotay, the Vulcan Tuvok, who was working undercover for Starfleet.
In Caretaker the raider fled into the Badlands with the USS Voyager in pursuit, and both ships were swept across the galaxy by the Caretaker's displacement wave. The two crews found themselves stranded near the Caretaker's array, seventy thousand light-years from home, and began to cooperate against the Kazon.
During the battle over the array Chakotay set the Val Jean on a collision course with a Kazon warship and was beamed away moments before impact, destroying both vessels. With his ship gone, the surviving Maquis joined Voyager's crew, Chakotay became Janeway's first officer, and Torres later rose to chief engineer.
