In 2257 Captain Christopher Pike went to the Klingon monastery on Boreth for a time crystal and saw a vision of the accident that would one day cripple him.
Discovery needed a time crystal to power the Red Angel suit, and Boreth's Klingon monks guarded a store of them. Their timekeeper, Tenavik, the grown son of L'Rell and Voq, warned Pike that anyone who took a crystal would be bound to the future it revealed.
When Pike touched the crystal, he saw himself years later, gravely injured while saving cadets and confined to a life-support chair. He accepted that future so that his crew and the galaxy might survive, and took the crystal back to Discovery.
