Geordi uses a probe to reach a stranded ship, and his mother may be on board.
Geordi La Forge uses a virtual reality interface to explore a damaged research vessel and, while there, he sees what he believes is his mother, who was thought to have been lost in space. He becomes convinced that she is still alive and begins to ignore warnings from his friends and from the ship's doctor.
The story is an emotional one for Geordi, who is tempted by the prospect of seeing his mother again. The crew has to decide whether to trust the vision or to see it as an illusion, and the solution is carefully worked out. The episode is a thoughtful exploration of grief and hope, and gives the engineer an affecting personal story.
