René Picard was the son of Robert and Marie Picard. In Family he met his famous uncle for the first time and quickly attached himself to him, asking about life on a starship and hoping to become a captain himself, to his father's disapproval.
In Star Trek Generations, Picard learned that René and Robert had died in a fire. The loss weighed heavily on him, since it meant the end of the Picard family line, and it shaped the idealized family life he was offered inside the Nexus before he chose to leave and stop Tolian Soran.
