Joann Owosekun is a human operations officer on the bridge of the USS Discovery, played by Oyin Oladejo. She grew up in a Luddite community on Earth before joining Starfleet, and she served aboard Discovery during the Klingon War and the Red Angel crisis before traveling with the ship to the 32nd century.
During the search for the creators of the Dark Matter Anomaly, Owosekun went with Michael Burnham to a casino on Porathia to outbid Cleveland Booker and Ruon Tarka for isolynium. When the crew came up short, she fought in the casino's ring to win the money they needed.
