Alixus is a human philosopher critical of humanity's dependence on technology, and the leader of a colony stranded on a planet where a strange field stops all technology from working. Benjamin Sisko and Miles O'Brien are trapped there too, and Alixus insists they live by the colony's austere rules, forbidding them to use medical supplies even to save a dying colonist.
In Paradise, Sisko defies her and is locked in a punishment box, while O'Brien traces the field to a buried generator. Alixus admits that she created the field herself, convinced the colonists had found their true potential, and she is taken into custody.
