Wolf 359 is a red dwarf star that lies close to Earth, and which became the site of one of the greatest disasters in Starfleet history. It is a small and dim star, but its position near the Sol system gave it great importance when the Borg arrived. It is a place that Starfleet remembers with sorrow.
The battle at Wolf 359 took place in the Next Generation era, when a Starfleet force attempted to stop a Borg cube that was heading toward Earth. The Borg destroyed most of the ships which took part, and many thousands of lives were lost. The defeat was a shock to the Federation, and it led to changes in Starfleet's tactics.
The battle is described in the Next Generation two-parter The Best of Both Worlds, in which the Borg have captured Picard and made him into Locutus. It is also the place where Commander Sisko's wife was killed, an event that shaped his life in Deep Space Nine. The star is a lasting memorial to those who died in the Borg attack.
