A region of space full of gas and particles where the Ba'ku planet's metaphasic radiation granted near-eternal youth, at the heart of the Insurrection crisis.
The Briar Patch is a region of space filled with clouds of gas, unstable particles and hard-to-predict hazards that make navigation very difficult. Starfleet ships rarely went there, and it remained largely unexplored into the late 24th century. Inside it lies the planet of the Ba'ku, whose rings produce metaphasic radiation.
This radiation slows ageing and heals the body, letting the Ba'ku live for centuries. In 2375 a group of Starfleet officers and the Son'a planned to move the Ba'ku from their world and collect its radiation for themselves, revealing that the Son'a were in fact Ba'ku exiles. Picard and his crew defied Starfleet orders to protect the Ba'ku, and the plan was stopped.
The Briar Patch is the main setting of Star Trek: Insurrection. The story raises questions about the Prime Directive and whether the needs of many justify harming a few, set in a part of space where life and youth can be renewed.
