The Ba'ku planet lies within the Briar Patch, a region of space rich in particles and radiation. The metaphasic radiation from its rings keeps its inhabitants young and healthy, giving them extraordinarily long lives.
In Star Trek: Insurrection, the Federation and the Son'a plan to relocate the Ba'ku secretly so that the rings' particles can be collected, an act that would make the planet uninhabitable. Picard leads a revolt against the plan, and the harvest is stopped before the planet is destroyed.
