The reopening of Starfleet Academy in San Francisco, closed in the century after the Burn, and the training of its first new class of cadets.
Starfleet Academy closed in the hard years after the Burn, and the Federation went more than a century without training a new generation of Starfleet officers there. As the Federation recovered, the Academy was formally reopened in San Francisco. The crew of the USS Discovery attended the ceremony, where they met the new Federation President, Laira Rillak.
The first new class of cadets trained under Chancellor Nahla Ake, a half-Lanthanite captain who also commanded the USS Athena. The ship served as a training vessel that docked at the San Francisco campus but could join the fleet when needed. Admiral Charles Vance worked with Ake as the Federation tried to win back worlds that had left.
The cadets came from many backgrounds, including Caleb Mir, a young man raised on the margins of society who joined in part to find his lost mother. The Academy also shared the campus with a more military War College, a remnant of the years after the Burn, and the two schools became fierce rivals.
