In 2151 Starfleet launched Enterprise NX-01 ahead of schedule, sending Earth's first warp 5 starship out under Captain Jonathan Archer to return a wounded Klingon home.
Enterprise was the first NX-class starship and the product of decades of work at the Warp 5 complex, where Henry Archer, the captain's father, had designed the engine that made it possible. The ship was still being prepared when an injured Klingon courier crashed on Earth, and Starfleet chose to launch weeks early so that Enterprise could carry him back to his homeworld.
The Vulcans had argued that humanity was not ready for deep space and pressed for caution. As part of the compromise, the Vulcan officer T'Pol joined the crew as science officer, serving beside chief engineer Trip Tucker, armory officer Malcolm Reed, communications officer Hoshi Sato, helmsman Travis Mayweather and the Denobulan doctor Phlox.
The launch marked the start of Earth's era of crewed exploration. Over the following decade the ship made first contact with many species, uncovered Vulcan secrets, fought through the Xindi crisis and helped lay the diplomatic groundwork for the United Federation of Planets.
