The 2401 alternate reality, created by Q, in which an authoritarian Confederation of Earth replaced the Federation, until Picard's crew restored history from 2024.
In 2401 Q trapped Jean-Luc Picard and his friends in an altered version of history. In this reality the Federation had never formed. In its place stood the Confederation of Earth, a xenophobic and militaristic state that had conquered many other species, with Picard as one of its most feared commanders.
Picard's companions kept their memories of the true timeline. They traced the change to 2024, when Picard's ancestor Renee Picard was due to join a pivotal mission to Europa. With the help of a captive Borg Queen, they flew La Sirena on a slingshot path back to 2024 Los Angeles to stop history from being rewritten.
In the past they struggled against the geneticist Adam Soong, who wanted to keep the Europa mission from launching, and with a Borg Queen who was trying to take over Agnes Jurati. Renee Picard joined the mission as history required. Q, who was dying, sent Picard and most of his crew home to 2401 with the Federation restored.
