The Romulans reappear after fifty years of silence.
The Enterprise recovers three humans from the twentieth century, frozen in cryogenic storage and found drifting in space. As they wake into the future, the crew attempts to help them adjust. At the same time, Federation outposts along the Neutral Zone have been destroyed, and the Romulans, who have been silent for half a century, seem to be involved.
The first-season finale reintroduces the Romulans, a major rival from the original series, and hints at a new, more serious threat from beyond the border. The story has two threads: the culture shock of the frozen humans and the political danger of the Romulans. The Romulans' reappearance sets up many stories, and the hint of a mysterious new power looms over the next season.
