Janeway undergoes a spiritual ordeal to heal Kes.
When a crew member is injured by an energy field at a sacred shrine, Janeway is willing to go through a rigorous ritual to find a way to cure her. The ritual tests her beliefs, and she has to decide between scientific reasoning and spiritual faith.
The episode is notable for the way it puts Janeway, who is a strong believer in science, in a position where she must have faith in something she cannot explain. It also deals with the tension between respecting another culture's beliefs and finding a practical solution.
