The crew is drawn into the harsh laws of a seemingly idyllic planet.

The Enterprise visits Rubicun III, a lush world whose people, the Edo, seem to live in an idyllic paradise with almost no crime. While on shore leave, Wesley Crusher accidentally breaks a rule in a flower bed, and he is condemned to death under the planet's strict and absolute law. Picard has to decide how far the Prime Directive requires him to go.
The episode is one of the series' early explorations of the Prime Directive, the Federation's rule of non-interference, and the cost of following it when a life is at stake. A powerful entity that the Edo regard as a god orbits overhead and complicates the situation. Fans tend to rate it as a weak early entry, though its moral question is a lasting one.
