The crew faces a space-dwelling creature and its newborn.
While investigating a mysterious lifeform, the Enterprise destroys what turns out to be a creature living in space. Geordi La Forge, meanwhile, is busy with a holodeck simulation of engineer Dr. Leah Brahms. When the real Dr. Brahms arrives on board to inspect his modifications, he is shocked to discover that she is very different from the hologram he knows.
The crew soon discovers that the creature left behind an infant, which is now attached to the ship and draining its energy. The episode has two stories, one an awkward personal drama and the other a moral dilemma about the harm that has been done. It is a thoughtful sequel to the earlier story and an interesting look at the ethics of caring for a newborn.
