Vatm was a Nezu scientist who discovered that the asteroids bombarding his world were artificial, and died before he could prove it.
Vatm was an astrophysicist on the Nezu homeworld, which was being pounded by asteroids. He was the first to realize the impacts were no natural disaster and tried to share his evidence with Voyager before his transmission was cut off.
In Rise, Tuvok and Neelix crashed on the planet while searching for him. Vatm joined them and a handful of others aboard an orbital elevator, the only way to reach orbit, but died unexpectedly during the climb. His death became a murder mystery for Tuvok and Neelix to solve as the crew discovered that the Etanian Order was behind the attacks.
