Ambassador Mauric represents the Kes, one of the two societies on Kesprytt III, in their bid to join the Federation. His people have long been in conflict with the Prytt, who want nothing to do with outsiders.
In Attached, Mauric works with Riker to rescue Picard and Crusher after the Prytt seize them. The deep mistrust between the two peoples convinces Picard that the Federation cannot accept a planet so divided, and he tells Mauric that the application must wait.
