He first appears in the two-part Homefront and Paradise Lost, when Sisko is posted to Earth during fears of Changeling infiltration. Joseph refuses the blood screenings imposed on the city and hides a serious illness from his family, and his stubbornness causes friction with his son.
In the seventh-season opener Image in the Sand, Benjamin is staying at the restaurant after leaving the station, and Joseph reveals a family secret: a woman named Sarah was Benjamin's real mother, a discovery that links Sisko's own birth to the Prophets. The restaurant serves as the family's home base on Earth.
