Hemmer is the chief engineer of the USS Enterprise in the first season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, played by Bruce Horak. He is an Aenar, the blind and telepathic Andorian subspecies, and he perceives his surroundings through his other senses and his telepathy. Gruff, sardonic and exacting, he hides a warm nature behind his bluntness.
He becomes a mentor to Cadet Nyota Uhura, recognizing and encouraging her talent while she doubts her place in Starfleet, and he earns the respect of the rest of Pike's crew.
In the penultimate first-season episode, All Those Who Wander,, Hemmer is infected with Gorn eggs during a rescue mission on an ice planet. Knowing the hatchlings will kill him and endanger the crew, he says his farewells and throws himself from a ledge to his death before they can emerge. His loss weighs heavily on Uhura, and the engineering post later passes to Pelia.
