The retired head of the Cardassian Obsidian Order and the secret father of Elim Garak, whose failed strike against the Founders destroyed his intelligence service.
Enabran Tain was the legendary former chief of the Obsidian Order, Cardassia's feared intelligence service, and the only head of that organisation to have lived to retire. He had once been mentor to Elim Garak, and the two shared a bitter history that included Garak's exile to Deep Space Nine. It was later revealed that Tain was in fact Garak's father.
In retirement Tain organised a joint operation with the Romulan Tal Shiar to destroy the Founders' homeworld with a pre-emptive strike. The Founders had anticipated the plan, and the combined fleet was ambushed and annihilated by the Dominion, a disaster that left the Obsidian Order crippled.
Tain survived the battle but was taken prisoner and held in a Dominion internment camp in the Gamma Quadrant, where Garak found him. Before he died there, he acknowledged Garak as his son. His failed gamble weakened Cardassia and helped open the way for its alliance with the Dominion.
