A teacher in a frontier society of abducted humans who secretly educates Skagaran children.
Bethany is a teacher in a society of about six thousand humans living like the American frontier of the 1860s on a planet in the Delphic Expanse. Their ancestors were abducted from Earth by the Skagarans, whom they later overthrew. In North Star she shows Archer the wreck of the Skagaran ship and helps him learn the planet's history.
Bethany is arrested by Deputy Bennings for teaching Skagaran children, which is forbidden. Archer helps her escape, but she is shot, and Phlox discovers while treating her that she herself is partly Skagaran.
