J'naii

Androgynous species that rejects gender

An androgynous humanoid species whose society regards any expression of male or female gender identity as an illness to be treated.

The J'naii are a humanoid species who evolved beyond distinct sexes and consider themselves androgynous. Children develop within a fibrous husk after a fertilized cell is placed inside it, a process that involves both parents.
J'naii society regards gender as primitive. Individuals who feel drawn to identify as male or female must hide those feelings, because the condition is treated as a mental disorder and corrected through psychotectic therapy.
In The Outcast, the J'naii asked the Enterprise for help finding a shuttle lost in a pocket of null space. The J'naii pilot Soren, working with William T. Riker, revealed a secret identification as female and the two fell in love. Soren was arrested and placed on trial, defending the right to feel as she did. Riker and Worf tried to rescue her, but by the time they reached her the therapy had already erased her feelings, and she no longer wished to leave.
