The Excelsior-class Enterprise launched in 2293, whose maiden voyage ended with Kirk apparently killed by the Nexus ribbon.
The USS Enterprise-B was an Excelsior-class starship, launched in 2293 as the successor to Kirk's Enterprise-A. Its captain was John Harriman, and its maiden voyage was a short publicity trip with reporters and the retired officers Kirk, Scott and Chekov aboard as guests.
Shortly after leaving, the ship received a distress call from two El-Aurian transports trapped in an energy ribbon known as the Nexus. The Enterprise-B had not yet been fully equipped, but it was the only ship in range. It managed to beam aboard some of the refugees, among them Guinan and Tolian Soran, before the transports were destroyed.
The ship itself became caught in the ribbon. Kirk went to the deflector control room to modify the deflector and free the ship, and the ribbon struck that section of the hull. Kirk was presumed dead, but he had actually been taken into the Nexus, where Picard found him in 2371.
