In 2369 Jellico was temporarily transferred from the Cairo to the Enterprise-D when Starfleet sent Jean-Luc Picard on a covert mission to Celtris III, since Jellico's experience with the Cardassians made him the choice to handle a tense standoff along the border.
Jellico's rigid command style clashed with the Enterprise crew, particularly William Riker, but his firm negotiating forced the Cardassians to back down and secured Picard's release, after which Jellico returned to his own ship.
