The Artifact was a Borg cube that had been cut off from the Collective and taken over by the Romulans in the early 2380s. Held at a Romulan reclamation site, it became the base of a project that disconnected its drones and studied Borg technology, and Hugh, the former drone befriended by the Enterprise-D crew, worked aboard as director of the effort to restore the freed drones.
In 2399 Soji Asha worked aboard the cube as a researcher, unaware that she was a synthetic, while the Romulan agent Narek watched her. Picard came aboard in search of her and escaped with her through a spatial trajector, while Elnor remained behind among the freed drones.
Seven of Nine later linked herself to the cube and reawakened its drones to wrest control from the Romulans. The Artifact then followed Picard's group to Coppelius, the world of Soji's people, where it came down on the planet's surface.
