The Narada was a huge Romulan mining vessel from the late twenty-fourth century, commanded by Nero. Built for industrial work but heavily armed, it far outclassed the ships of the twenty-third century it ended up fighting.
After Romulus was destroyed by a supernova in 2387, Nero blamed Spock for failing to save it. The Narada was caught in the black hole Spock created with red matter and emerged in 2233, where it destroyed the USS Kelvin and split off a new timeline. Nero then waited for years until Spock arrived, captured him and stole his red matter.
In 2258 the Narada drilled into Vulcan and used red matter to destroy the planet, then moved on to attack Earth. Kirk and the younger Spock boarded the ship, and Spock flew the elder Spock's vessel into the Narada, igniting the red matter. The Enterprise then fired on the Narada, which was pulled into the resulting black hole and destroyed.
