Discovery of the Bajoran wormhole

The first stable wormhole and the Prophets

In 2369 Benjamin Sisko and Jadzia Dax found a stable wormhole to the Gamma Quadrant, inhabited by the beings Bajorans worship as the Prophets.

Shortly after taking command of Deep Space Nine in 2369, Sisko received from Kai Opaka an Orb that hinted at the location of the Celestial Temple of the Prophets. Sisko and Jadzia Dax searched the Denorios Belt and discovered the first stable wormhole ever known, leading 70,000 light-years to the Gamma Quadrant.
Inside, Sisko met the wormhole's inhabitants, beings who did not experience linear time. He explained the nature of human life to them, and in doing so faced his grief over his wife's death at Wolf 359. The Bajorans recognized these beings as their Prophets and Sisko as the Emissary they had long expected.
The station was moved to the mouth of the wormhole to claim it for Bajor. A Cardassian force led by Gul Jasad threatened the station, but Major Kira bluffed them until Sisko emerged with a Cardassian ship that had followed him. The wormhole turned Bajor into a center of trade and later the gateway to the Dominion.
